911 Addressing & GIS Services

Rural Property Addressing

Helping responders find you quickly.

Rural Property Addressing aims to provide all occupied rural properties with a nationally recognized address that will assist Emergency Services and other service providers in locating a property. A rural address will consist of a distance-based road number, road name, locality, and postcode. The new addresses will only identify the property location and not who lives there, therefore not impacting the privacy of the residents.

Otero County Ordinance No. 15-08, known as the "Otero County Rural Addressing Procedures Ordinance," establishes a uniform system for naming roads and assigning addresses to ensure quick and accurate location by emergency services.

Why This Matters

A consistent addressing system:

  • Helps fire, EMS, and police find your location quickly

  • Supports accurate routing in GPS and emergency systems

  • Ensures correct service delivery for utilities and mail

Addressing standards in rural areas are often distance-based and follow rules designed to avoid confusion and improve response times. If an existing address does not align with these standards, updates may be necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need a 911 address if my house is already on a map?

Yes. Your official 911 address must be in the county emergency dispatch system before it can be used for emergencies or service delivery.

  • My address shows incorrectly in Google Maps. Will this fix it?

Updating your address in our system helps emergency services, but third-party maps (like Google) may still need separate updates.

  • Can private roads be named?

Yes — private road names must be reviewed and approved to enter the official addressing system.
